Raffles International Youth Arts Festival, Singapore

The Raffles Music Competition Singapore is an international youth music competition with a jury comprising of renowned conductors and orchestra principals, etc. Each participating chamber or instrumental orchestra will perform one or two pieces from different periods of time of their choice.The 10th edition of the Competition in 2024 will be divided into an online and a live competition in Singapore, as in the previous edition. Participants will have the opportunity to showcase their skills in a variety of musical categories, including piano, violin, cello, winds, strings, voice and more. A number of different age and level categories have been set up to ensure that every musician will be able to find a competitive platform that suits them.

The winning team of the Honorary Gold Award will have the opportunity to play in the closing concert of the festival, and the organizing committee will invite some of the teams to participate in public performances according to their applications. These performances will not only give the music groups a chance to practice in public, but also use the traditional music of each country as a bridge to let the local people appreciate and understand the humanities of the countries in which the groups are located.

The Judges’ Meeting will be held in the form of a sharing session, where the judges will present their insights observed during the competition, suggesting parts that can be improved and shared. All participating teams will have the opportunity to meet face-to-face with young musicians from other countries and receive on-site lessons and guidance from renowned musicians to improve their musical and performance skills.

In addition to the competitions, the Festival offers a wealth of learning opportunities through a variety of activities, such as master classes, concerts, seminars and workshops organized by internationally renowned music educators and performers who generously share their knowledge and impart their skills.

The soloist program includes piano, violin, viola, cello and woodwinds, and participants are divided into the Early Childhood Group (7 years old and under), Junior A (7-9 years old), Junior B (9-12 years old), and Junior Youth Group (12-16 years old) according to their age.

The Orchestra Repertoire Program includes instrumental ensemble piano four-hands, violin/cello ensemble and small chamber music. The Chamber Music and Orchestra competitions are categorized according to the age of the participants into Chamber Music Group A (under 12 years old), Group B (12-18 years old), and Group C (18-25 years old), with the number of participants in Chamber Music ranging from 2 to 7, and in Orchestra from 8 to 40.

The jury will base their scores on the following criteria: sound (40%, including volume, sound quality, timbre, and coordination), technique (40%, including sense of rhythm and intonation), and overall performance (20%, including stage presence, handling of the piece, and handling of the tune).

Based on the scoring criteria, a panel of judges will award participants an overall score of 95 points or more for the Special Honorary Gold Award, 90 points or more for the Gold Award, 88 points or more for the Silver Award, 85 points or more for the Bronze Award, and 80 points or more for the Special Merit Award.
